Tranquility Ocean Adventures

When I decided to pursue clinical social work, I was stepping into unfamiliar territory. Much of my life had been spent in military leadership, education, and service-oriented roles where responsibility, performance, and problem-solving were expected. While those experiences shaped who I am, they did not make me a clinician. Entering a new profession later in life required me to become a student again, to accept uncertainty, and to rely on the support of others. What changed my trajectory was not a single act of generosity but the unexpected grace shown by many people along the way. Professors shared their knowledge and encouragement. Supervisors invested time in my development. Colleagues offered guidance and perspective. Most importantly, clients entrusted me with their stories while I was still growing into my role. None of these individuals were obligated to invest in me, yet they did. They chose to see possibility instead of limitation and potential instead of inexperience. Looking back, I realize that opportunity often arrives in simple forms. Sometimes it is a conversation. Sometimes it is patience. Sometimes it is someone choosing to believe in us before we fully believe in ourselves. What may feel like a small act to one person can become a defining moment for another. That experience continues to shape how I approach both my work and my life. As a clinical social worker, I regularly meet people who feel overwhelmed, discouraged, or uncertain about their next step. Many are carrying burdens they have managed alone for a long time. I cannot solve every problem they face, but I can offer the same thing that was offered to me: a belief that growth is possible and that people are often capable of more than they realize. I view every interaction as an opportunity to help someone recognize strengths they may have forgotten or possibilities they may not yet see. This has also become my personal pay-it-forward practice. Whenever possible, I try to be the person who says yes to a conversation, a question, or a request for guidance. I try to share what others have freely shared with me; time, knowledge, encouragement, and perspective. The older I get, the more convinced I become that lasting impact is rarely created through grand gestures. More often, it is built through ordinary moments when one person chooses to invest in another. The opportunities I have received were gifts. The best way I know to honor those gifts is to create opportunities for others. To me, that is what paying it forward means, receiving grace with gratitude and transforming it into service for someone else.

One time, I was hungry and still had several errands left to run, so I stopped at a Waffle House for breakfast. I ordered a simple omelet meal and was almost finished eating when I noticed a veteran standing up to pay for his food. I really did not have much money left after paying for my own meal, but something in me wanted to pay for his. I walked up to the cashier and asked if I could cover the gentleman’s check. At first, he refused, but I insisted and paid for it anyway. The veteran thanked me and said that people do not really do things like that for veterans anymore. I told him it was simply my way of saying thank you for what he had done for this country. What stayed with me afterward was him saying that people do not do that anymore. To me, that is heartbreaking. These men and women put their lives on the line for us. The very least we can do is look out for them when we can. Since then, I have tried to help veterans in whatever small ways I am able. Sometimes it is just saying thank you. Sometimes it is helping with food, medicine, or a little money when they need it. I am always glad to do it, because somehow kindness has a way of coming back in other ways.

I had been seeking assistance with web development since 2020. I often had strategic conversations with those who had a website and what difficulties they had experienced. I sometimes asked for help directly, which was often met with a casual confirmation, with no real traction behind their words. Recently, an offer from an unexpected source seemed to signal that it was the right moment, and clarity finally came to me. The web designer was seeking a project that would enhance their portfolio and align with something they wanted to support. Through conversation, we designed an exceptional website for no upfront cost. It was a moment of gratitude for me because of an opportunity search from them. It is something I will remember simply because it gave me a platform that I needed. This act has quietly become kinder in my operational fire. And the fire is gaining size. Sometimes decisions and choices give us the opportunity to help someone in need, and what we see as minimal has a profound impact. That is what paying it forward means to me.
